The 1996 AWS Awards
Recipients are selected by the AWS Awards Committee and honored the following April during the AWS Annual Convention. In 1997, awards were presented at a ceremony held on Wednesday, April 16, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Comfort A. Adams Lecture Award
The American Welding Society sponsors this lectureship. It was
created in memory of Dr. Comfort A. Adams, AWS founder and its
first President. The award is presented to an outstanding
scientist
or engineer for a lecture describing a new or distinctive
development
in the field of welding. The lecture is presented during the
AWS International Welding and Fabricating Exposition and
Convention.
The first recipient was C. A. Adams in 1943.

"Welding Metallurgy: Past, Present and Future"
Adams Memorial Membership Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society and
recognizes
educators for outstanding teaching in their undergraduate and
postgraduate engineering institutions. The first recipients were
W. H. Bruckner, A. E. Flanigan, R. B. McCauley, G. S. Schaller,
and R. A. Wynat in 1960.

Howard E. Adkins Memorial Instructor
Membership Award
This award is sponsored by the friends and family of Howard E. Adkins and recognizes instructors for their outstanding teaching accomplishments at the high school, trade school, technical institute, and junior college levels. The first recipients were
H. M. Anderson and T. M. Flack in 1965.
1996 Winners:
Arsham Amirikian Memorial Maritime Welding Award
This award is endowed by the late Arsham Amirikian. It recognizes the best article published in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year describing how maritime structures were greatly improved through the substitution of new methods in which welding played an important part. The first recipient was P. W. Marshall in 1991.

Robert J. Conkling Memorial Award
This award is named in memory of Robert J. Conkling. He
encouraged
young people to enter the welding industry and contributed
generously
of his time and talents to the development of the AWS
International
Welding and Fabricating Exposition and Convention. This award
is sponsored by the American Welding Society and is presented
to schools that trained the two first-place winners in the
national
VICA welding competition.

A. F. Davis Silver Medal Award
This award is endowed by the late A. F. Davis, former Vice
President
and Secretary of The Lincoln Electric Co. It is awarded to the
authors of papers published in the Welding Journal during
the previous calendar year that represents the best contributions
to the progress of welding in the categories of 1) Machine
Design;
2) Maintenance and Surfacing; and 3) Structure Design.

Dalton E. Hamilton Memorial CWI of the Year Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society in memory
of Dalton E. Hamilton who contributed greatly to the success of
the Society's Certified Welding programs. This award recognizes
AWS members participating in the CWI/CAWI programs whose
inspection,
Society and civic activities have enhanced public awareness of
the Society and the CWI program or have otherwise made an
outstanding
contribution to the science of welding inspection. The first
recipient was E. Sorif in 1991.
1996 Winner:
Honorary Membership Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society and is
presented to a person of acknowledged eminence in the welding
profession or who is credited with exceptional accomplishments
in the industry. The first recipients were C. A. Adams and E.
Fouche in 1922.

William Irrgang Memorial Award
This award is sponsored by The Lincoln Electric Co. to honor the
late William Irrgang. It is award to the individual who has done
the most to enhance the American Welding Society's goal of
advancing
the science and technology of welding over the last five years.
The first recipient was R. J. Christoffel in 1986.
1996 Winner:
Charles H. Jennings Memorial Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society in honor
of Charles H. Jennings, who served as AWS President during the
1951-52 year. This award is presented for the most valuable
paper
written by a college student or faculty representative published
in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year.
The first recipient was N. R. Braton in 1967.

James F. Lincoln Gold Medal Award
This award is endowed by the late J. F. Lincoln, former Chairman
of the Board of The Lincoln Electric Company. This award is
presented
for the paper with a single author that represents the best
original
contribution to the advancement and use of welding published in
the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year.
The first recipient was T. M. Jackson in 1936.

"Measurement and Prediction of Energy Transfer Efficiency
in Laser Beam Welding" January 1996 issue
McKay-Helm Award
This award is sponsored by McKay Welding Products, a division
of the Hobart Brothers Co., to honor two pioneers of the welding
industry. James C. McKay was the president of the McKay-Helm
Co. for over 30 years, and Dr. David Helm occupied the McKay
Chair
in Welding Metallurgy at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh from
1934 to 1973. It is presented for the best contribution to the
advancement of knowledge of low-alloy steel, stainless steel or
surfacing welding metals, involving the use, development or
testing
of these materials, as represented by articles published in the
Welding Journal during the previous calendar year. The
first recipients were M. Areskoug, A. V. Bernstein, and S.
Forsberg
in 1976.

Susceptibility during the Sigmajig Weldability Test" March
1996 issue
Professor Masubuchi-Shinsho Corporation Award
This award is sponsored by the Shinsho Corporation. It was
established
to recognize Professor Koichi Masubuchi who has made significant
contributions in advancing the science and technology of welding,
especially welding fabrication of marine and space structures.
This award is presented to two individuals who have made
significant
contributions to the advancement of the science and technology
of materials joining through research and development. The first
recipients were W. A. Baeslack, III and H. Cocoa in 1992.
1996 Winners:
Samuel Wylie Miller Memorial Medal Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society to honor
Samuel Wylie Miller, President during the 1921-22 year. It is
awarded for meritorious achievements which have contributed
conspicuously
to the advancement of the art and science of welding and cutting.
The first recipient was C. A. Adams in 1928.

National Meritorious Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society and is
given in recognition of good counsel, loyalty and devotion to
the affairs of the Society, assistance in promoting cordial
relations
with industry and other organizations, and for the contribution
of time and effort on behalf of the Society. The first recipients
were J. H. Blankenbuehler and I. Morrison in 1956.

Robert L. Peaslee Brazing Award
This award is sponsored by the Wall Colmonony Corporation and
honors Robert L. Peaslee for his many years of dedicated service
to the industry. This award recognizes the paper considered to
be the best contribution to the science or technology of brazing
published in the Welding Journal during the previous
calendar
year. The first recipients were M. W. Ko, T. Onzawa, and A.
Susumura
in 1991.

"A New Low Melting Point Aluminum Braze" August 1996

Plasma Arc Cutting Award
This award is sponsored by Hypertherm and is presented to the
individual whose application represents the most productive use
of plasma arc cutting as compared to a previous cutting method
or technology. The first recipient was L. Stebbins in 1995.
1996 Winner:
Plummer Memorial Educational Lecture Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society to
recognize
Fred L. Plummer's service to the Society as President from
1952-54
and as Executive Director from 1957-69. This award recognizes
outstanding contributions to the national educational lectures
presented at the Annual International Welding and Fabricating
Exposition and Convention of the American Welding Society. The
first recipient was W. F. Pellini in 1957.

"Teach Welding Smarter, Not Harder"
Safety and Health Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society to
recognize
individuals for promoting welding safety and health through
research,
educational activities, developing safe practices, or
disseminating
information through publications or other means, thereby
fostering
public awareness and welfare. The first recipient was G. R. Spies
in 1992.
1996 Winner:
Warren F. Savage Memorial Award
This award is endowed by former associates of Professor Warren
F. Savage to honor his dedication and accomplishments in the
field
of welding metallurgy. This award recognizes the paper published
in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year
that best represents innovative research resulting in a better
understanding of the metallurgical principles related to welding.
The first recipients were S. Lathabai and R. D. Stout in 1986.

"Plasma Spray Joining of Al-Matrix Particulate Reinforced
Composites" September 1996 issue
Silver Quill Editorial Achievement Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society to
recognize
the author, editors and/or publishers of the magazine, outside
the welding field, which publishes the best original editorial
coverage on the subject of welding. The first magazine to
receive
this award was American Machinist in 1984.

William Spraragen Memorial Membership Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society and honors William Spraragen, a founding member of the Society and the first Editor of the Welding Journal, serving from 1992 to 1954. It is presented for the best paper published in the Research Supplement section of the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year.
The first recipient was E. Cushman in 1961.

for Joining Materials" March 1996 issue
R. D. Thomas Memorial Award
This award is sponsored by R. D. Thomas & Co. It honors the
late R. D. Thomas, an AWS charter member and the AWS
Representative
to the first organization meeting of the International Institute
of Welding (IIW). This award is presented to a member of the
American Council of IIW or to an AWS member who has made a
substantial
contribution to the activities of IIW. The first recipient was
W. Spraragen in 1965.
1996 Winner:
R. D. Thomas, Jr., International Lecture Award
This award is sponsored by the American Welding Society and was
created to honor R. D. Thomas, Jr. for his participation in
IIW/ISO
activities. It is presented to an individual who is involved
in IIW/ISO international activities for a lecture that
exemplifies
global research and standardization of welding technology. The
first recipient was J. H. Walker in 1992.
1996 Winner:
"World Trade and International Welding Standards"
Elihu Thomson Resistance Welding Award
This award is sponsored by the Resistance Welders Manufacturers'
Association and was established in conjunction with the 100th
Anniversary of the invention of resistance welding. This award
is presented for an outstanding contribution to the technology
and application of RW, including equipment innovations, unique
applications in production, a paper published in the Welding
Journal or other prestigious publication, or other activity
of merit. The first recipient was T. E. Jones in 1986.
1996 Winner:
Prof. Dr. Rene Wasserman Memorial Award
This award is sponsored by Eutectic+Castolin Corporation. It is presented for the paper published in the Welding Journal during the previous calendar year that exhibits the best application of welding, brazing, or thermal spraying for maintenance and repair.
The first recipient was F. E. Garriott in 1967.

George E. Willis Award
This award is sponsored by The Lincoln Electric Company to honor George E. Willis. It is presented to an individual for promoting the advancement of welding internationally, by fostering cooperative participation in areas such as technology transfer, standards rationalization, and promotion of industrial goodwill.
The first recipient was R. D. Thomas, Jr., in 1992.
