Certified Robotic Arc Welding

Certification Program for Robotic Arc Welding - Operators and Technicians

Come to Atlanta and compete in the AWS 2014 Robotics Contest
Robotic welding professionals will compete for the second year at the FABTECH exhibition taking place in Atlanta from November 11 to 13.  Pre-screened candidates will take a simulated AWS Certified Robotic Arc Welding (CRAW) written examination and will participate in an actual CRAW performance examination with fully functional welding robots. The candidates will compete for recognition and free CRAW certification tuition covering training and examination.

To apply as a competitor, drop by the AWS booth or email this entry form to crawcontest@aws.org

The AWS Certification Program for Robotic Arc Welding - Operators and Technicians (CRAW) allows many welding personnel employed in various welding sectors to measure themselves against standards for their occupation. It also signifies that the CRAW Operator or Technician has demonstrated the capability of working with various codes, standards, and specifications. Since proof of active practice or re-examination is required every three years, certification also signifies that the CRAW Operator or Technician is current with the welding industry.

Requirements for CRAW Examination
The AWS D16.4:2005 Specification for the Qualification of Robotic Arc Welding Personnel sets the principal requirements for taking the CRAW examination:

FOR OPERATOR CERTIFICATION FOR TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION

Experience and Education Requirements

High school graduate or have achieved a state or military approved high school equivalency (e.g., GED).

Have at least 6 months of experience in manual or semiautomatic arc welding processes as a welder.

Have twelve (12) months of experience as a welder (including robotic and automatic operator), including the before mentioned (6) months of manual or semiautomatic arc welding.

Have three (3) or more years of experience in an occupational function that has a direct relationship to welding or robotics, including welder experience listed above and other functions such as inspector or quality control.

Note:  Post-secondary education in welding, technical, robotic, technology, electrical, or engineering discipline, may be substituted for an equal number of years, but not more than 2 years.
Note:  Post-secondary education may not be substituted for or credited toward the before mentioned experience requirements of (6) months of manual or semiautomatic arc welding processes as a welder, or the eighteen (12) months of experience as a welder (including robotic and automatic operator).

High school graduate or have achieved a state or military approved high school equivalency (e.g., GED).

Have at least 6 months of experience in manual or semiautomatic arc welding processes as a welder.

Have eighteen (18) months of experience as a welder (including robotic and automatic operator), including the before mentioned (6) months of manual or semiautomatic arc welding.

Have five (5) or more years of experience in an occupational function that has a direct relationship to welding or robotics, including welder experience listed above and other functions such as inspector or quality control.

Note:  Post-secondary education in welding, technical, robotic, technology, electrical, or engineering discipline, may be substituted for an equal number of years, but not more than 2 years.
Note:  Post-secondary education may not be substituted for or credited toward the before mentioned experience requirements of (6) months of manual or semiautomatic arc welding processes as a welder, or the eighteen (18) months of experience as a welder (including robotic and automatic operator).

Hold current CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) certification.

Training Recommendations

Completion of original equipment manufacturer or equivalent Robotic Programming Course.

Receive instruction in the operation of quality measuring tools including applicable computer software for measuring the weld cross section.

Be familiar with personal computers.

*Current CWI certification is a requirement for the CRAW-T certification. Failure to achieve and/or maintain CWI certification will result in the CRAW-O certification ONLY.

This two-part exam is comprised of both a Part A - multiple-choice test consisting of 136 questions, and a Part B - Performance test that covers the practical demonstration of knowledge and ability involving a robotic system. A pass mark of 75% is required on Part A in order to meet the minimum requirements for certification as CRAW Operator or Technician.

Both parts of the exam will be conducted at the same AWS Approved Test Site.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST SUCCESSFULLY PASS THE TWO-PART CRAW EXAMINATION
